Ectaco EGM500 Partner - Disappointing Mar 12, 2010

I ordered the EGm500 Partner E500T Engl/German Talking Dictionary for my mother's upcoming trip to Germany. My intention was for her to be able to quickly look up phrases in English and have the device speak the phrase in German so she could easily communicate. Unfortunately, I found multiple things that would make it difficult for my mother to use.
The first thing I noticed was the display is very difficult to read. The background is dark and the text is black. Sitting in our kitchen under the light I had to strain my eyes to read the text. It would be even harder for my mother to see the screen outside.
When the device is set so you can look up phrases in English to be translated into German, the device speaks the English phrase. Our intended use for the device was to look up phrases in English to be spoken in German. I discovered there is a button you can press so it speaks the German phrase, but you must press it each and every time you want it to speak a phrase, which makes the process more cumbersome.
The spoken voice is not natural. It sounds like a robot and is not easily understood.
When browsing for a particular phrase, only one phrase is listed on the screen at a time, rather than a list that you can page through, so going through the available phrases takes a long time - making it useless when trying to communicate in real time.
This product may be helpful for someone trying to learn German, but it isn't designed well for someone wanting to use it as a travel translator.
