5Love it, very helpful!  Jun 22, 2008 By amazonguppy
I'm traveling to Ethiopia soon and I wanted to become familiar with the language. Amharic is a very difficult language but this CD offers great immersion into it. It doesn't offer any grammatical education or full sentences. It is vocabulary based and the words and short phrases are divided into sections such as Food, Basics, etc. Each word is pronounced by a mail and female voice and is shown in English ( or other language you choose) as well as in Amharic script. There are also options to be quizzed and play games with the different vocabulary. You can also record yourself saying the words and compare it to the program's pronunciation. This is a great CD for learning how this language sounds and practicing saying it. I highly recommend it!

3CD not compatible with latest version of iTunes 10  Feb 02, 2011 By Alphalaydie
I purchased this item because I wanted to supplement my written Amarigna lessons with audio. This CD helps a little ... but it fails to provide you with ALL forms of each word. For example, when saying "Please" only the word used to address a male is taught. You will definitely embarrass yourself by saying "Ibakow" to a female! In my opinion, you really need to have a rudimentary understanding of the masculine/feminine/elder/plural forms of certain words before you think about using this CD. I will admit that this CD will definitely help you with pronunciation, which is why I gave it 3 starts and not 2. THE BIGGEST problem with this CD is that it is not compatible with the newest version of iTunes. I tried to download it to my iPod and learned quite quickly (well... after attempting to download the CD at least 5 times and getting the same message telling me to update my iTunes software). Having the ability to listen/learn during my daily commute was an added incentive when I decided to purchase this item, so I was quite disappointed when it didn't work out. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of relatively inexpensive learning materials for Amarigna. This was a cheap find (and Rosetta Stone does not offer Amarigna ...boo) so you might as well go ahead and try this one out. I would also suggest going on youtube and searching "amharic lessons" to find some VERY helpful learning videos provided by the LOJ society.

4Wonderful method, but lacks important key phrases  Dec 11, 2010 By MarinaMama
I love using this program; it's a great way to hear the language and to practice with as much repetition as I need. However, I find the phrases section lacking many key phrases as "YaYa" commented. "Where is the toilet?" "How are you?" "I am fine" "What's your name?" are some obvious omissions. I also purchased the Lonely Planet phrasebook which is very useful, but I like to practice with Talk Now. I just wish it were more complete. Update: I just found internetpolyglot online for free! Now I can practice more phrases, hearing them first. There're probably even more free resources online to find!

4Generic but does the job!  Sep 10, 2010 By J. A. Berlin
The characters are generic, and there is nothing culturally ethiopian about this product AT ALL... except the fact that they have an amharic-speaking voice dubbed into the mouths of the generic people. For BEGINNERS, this is great.

5Helpful Introduction  Sep 30, 2010 By Larry Pediford
It is a very helpful introduction to Amharic pronounciation, as it is interactive, and can correct you if you pronounce the words incorrectly. It does'nt teach you the Amharic syllabary/alphabet, but it has many features like speech recording, which compares your pronounciation to the speakers on the CD, many words to learn and a dictionary which you can print. A good choice for beginners.
