4Very Good Vocabulary builder 3.5 stars  Oct 15, 2009 By MP
This is a good software to build new vocabulary. I have used it for 2 weeks now. I have completed both disc 1 & 2 of the first level and I am currently working on level 2 disk 1. The first 2 disk will not teach you grammar, for that you will need to use the audio file CD. The Level 1 disc 1 and level 2 disc 1 share a similar format. You accumulate points by reviewing pictures associated with words and then you take a "test" or game, which is quite easy. To complete the number of points required you must take 2 sets of final exams. One is easy and the second one is much more difficult since a lot of concentration is required. You will be tested not only in German vocabulary but your memory skills (they show 5 flash cards with images, then they are flipped and the software will speak an object in german, you will need to remember the object plus which flash card it corresponds to).
For the money it is a good value and if I had to learn another language I would get one from the series. One caveat: the graphics are dated by the software does its job

3Well, the Price is Right  Aug 28, 2010 By Christina "Internet Automaton"
I've never used Rosetta Stone, but just based on the price difference alone I think it's foolish of both Topics and Amazon reviewers to compare the two. We all know this is going to be nothing like Rosetta Stone. Topics only compares them to try to sucker the extremely gullible.
The first thing that struck me was how "cheap" the product appeared to be. A long time ago I had at earlier version of Instant Immersion and it was much more mature and professional. This sort of reminds me of some educational programs you'd have to work with in public school back in 1993. The animation is out-dated, the menus are somewhat childish, but it's workable. You get in there, you say, "Oh, this is kind of weird," but then you get used to it.
Most importantly, let me just tell you that if you are serious about speaking German. If you want to learn to speak like a native and carry on a natural conversation with natives you will need to invest in more than this. Nothing beats a native speaking tutor. You can find them for sometimes around $20 an hour.I have heard of people even getting into language exchange friendships on Skype, though I haven't done anything like that myself.
This program will teach you some very useful, extremely elementary phrases, but some of the stuff it's teaching you are things that native speaking Germans don't really use. A lot of what it teaches you is stiff and out-dated language that would get you instantly pegged as a foreigner who learned German from a boring textbook and while that's not bad, per se, if you want to feel comfortable and have regular conversations with regular people you'll want to supplement this.
I am currently taking German lessons with a professional language instructor who is also a native German and she has corrected things I've learned from this software a number of times telling me that people in Germany wouldn't usually say this or that.
I found this extremely helpful for learning numbers. It was inaccurate at least one of the colors and it leaves out some important words.
The software isn't bad. Just don't trust it too much I guess is what I'm saying is nothing compares to learning the language from a person who actually speaks it. Learning the stiff, textbook version of the language can't hurt, but people (even mature adults) in the real world don't speak so and if you want to talk to them in their own level a tutor will really help.
So I give the software three stars. It'll give you a rough foundation with only a few mistakes that I've noticed.

1Mac incompatibility and not comparable to RS  Apr 10, 2010 By C. Weaver "PsychoDoc"
I have used Rosetta Stone and this product. I agree that neither are quite what they promise, which is an EASY way to learn a language. For someone to compare this favorably to RS is highly suspicious to me. After multiple failed attempts to get this product to work on my Mac, I went to a PC laptop to actually check it out. This product compares to Rosetta Stone in the way that a fast food hamburger compares to a well-prepared steak. This is really nothing more than a mildly-interactive vocabulary list. Perhaps that's worth the money, but don't confuse it with the advanced learning procedures from Rosetta Stone. My problem with RS is that they do not show you enough direct translation vocabulary. So in that sense, this would be a nice complement to RS. The audio CD's included in this are actual lessons, thus not really helpful for drilling and memorizing. It's really not comparable to RS at all, and any comparison is incredibly unfair. They should take those claims off of their packaging. I'll be demanding a refund for the Mac incompatibility, but otherwise would make use of the money back guarantee. Save yourself the hassle.

3Completely Mac Compatible  Aug 23, 2010 By MechC
I run the the three level Instant Immersion disc on my Mac and my wife's Mac book. What I have learned from this is, that any language software works if you use it. Just because something cost $400 is not going to make you learn any more, it is about attitude. U will learn beginning German with this. The difference between this and Rosetta Stone is the voice recognition. Immersion records your voice and you have to analyze your pronunciation yourself. Rosetta Stone will make you say the word until the computer is satisfied. So the final verdict for me is Rosetta Stone is not worth the hundred's of extra dollars.

Also I found a Plantronics Audio 646 DSP mic and head set that plugs into computer via USB for $40 bucks at local electronic store and it works so easy and on both of my Macs.

4Good place to start  Apr 15, 2010 By Bob
For the price, Instant Immersion German has been really good. I am enjoying the interactive approach/games for learning vocabulary and testing my knowledge. It runs on a Mac. Two unexpected positives are: being able to hear each word spoken by two different people, and being able to see each person as they speak.
