Great End-Of-Life Legal Planner / NOT FOR MACS Dec 03, 2010
By Book Fan PROS - very useful complete package - 5 stars CONS - PC-only software (not mentioned in description) - 1 star
The book looks decent for all sorts of end-of-life planning and legal issues that goes well beyond the basic task of will writing. It includes lots of things I didn't think about, including health care directives and funeral arrangements. Evidently the software includes various supportive documents, such as executors checklist, vehicle authorizations, etc.
There are some odd gaps. For example, it explains why you don't want to die without a will ("intestate"), but it doesn't give the state-by-state specifics of how your estate would be divided, even though for many other topics (e.g. witnessing, health care directives) they do provide the state-by-state variations.
But, the biggest gap in this book-software package is informing the potential buyer that the software is for PC only!!!!
Before ordering this book/software package, I carefully checked the Amazon description for any limitations or restrictions. The only thing mentioned was that it was not valid in Louisiana or US territories, so I thought it was safe for me as a Mac user (also I have used other Nolo products that are simply HTML files which work fine on a Mac, so I thought this might be the case here). The disk definitely does not work on a Mac, but the FAQ on the disk mentions that Mac users can prepare wills online at their site. This I checked, and unfortunately, Mac users have to pay another $60-$80 dollars to use their online will writing services! (There is no discount for those who have already purchased the book; also there is potential loss of privacy by doing the will over the web.)
I can obtain and install a PC emulator and put it on my Mac to try to run this software. No guarantee that will work, and it shouldn't even be necessary to do so. There are plenty of consumer software packages which work both on Mac and PC, so it is astounding that Nolo is so backward. But they really need to put this info in their Amazon product description (it is not there at the time of this writing).

Great Product for the $$ Dec 11, 2010
By Bibliophile By the Sea Over 10 years ago we paid a lawyer a good chunk of change to prepare (2) wills. But circumstances change, and we did want to make a few revisions without incurring a lot of unnecessary cost.
The Quicken WillMaker Book and Software Plus for 2011 was the right choice for us. The product is EASY to use, you don't need to know the laws (it does), and even if you don't know much about what is involved with making out a will. The program walks you through step-by-step, and prompts you complete the appropriate sections/information. There are loads of templates available (not a one size fits all product); you customize to your specific situations. As an added bonus, a Living Trust option is included for those interested. As an added bonus there is a real, live customer support function available with this product -- always a plus. An excellent product; saved us time and $$.

Has everything you can think of Nov 22, 2010
By D. Krepak I have Windows XP. Installation was easy without any problems or incompatibility issues. The book is very complete with a lot of explanations of the many forms available through the program. General legal information regarding differences between states is covered. It isn't just for making a will as I thought. It has forms for many things: living will, power of attorney, guardianship, medical permission for minors, just to name a few. Besides being used personally, businesses may find some useful information as well. The forms are easy to fill out, self-explanatory without directions needed. I was able to print the forms I wanted without any difficulty. You wouldn't need to get any other books or programs for making a will as this has it all and then some. I had been putting off making a will but when I saw this was available through Vine I asked for it. I'm glad I did.

A Good Tool to Use to Draft a Will Dec 14, 2010
By scesq

I tend to like Nolo Press books. I have WillMaker 2009 which I reviewed positively in the past. I plan to make some changes in my will in the next few months. The new book and new software ensures that I would get any updates to the software until January 1, 2012.
A brief comparison of the two books shows that one major difference is that chapters 12 through 21 of the 2009 book which dealt with various types of trusts are no longer included. Trusts are mentioned in the 2011 book but in less detail. The 2011 book does give you access to Nolo's Online Living Trust which has a reported value of $169. I have not looked at this in much detail yet since I have no need for trusts and you do need to register. Also included with registration is a download of Nolo's Encyclopedia of Everyday Law.
The 2009 and 2011 books use the same format. Nolo is great at using plenty of headings and subheadings so that there is no confusion as to what needs to be done when drafting a will. In addition symbols tell readers of certain important issues. For instance there are caution symbols addressing possible mistakes people might make, resource symbols suggesting other resources that may help and see an expert symbols addressing a few area where lawyers are suggested. In addition there is a chapter that talks about additional help options like how to do research yourself or how to find an attorney.
The software is easy to use and walks you through drafting a will. There is a user's guide for the software at the back of the book that is a little over a 100 pages. I used it once or twice when I had questions about printing documents.
I always run legal documents by an attorney but this saved me a lot of money because I only spent a short time with the attorney. This is a great resource if you want to draft a will. Nolo is a good source of legal information.
